about
mankazar is an independent film production company based in yerevan and
los angeles by
christine haroutounian and maxwell schwartz, focusing on contemporary armenian cinema and beyond.
recent titles include haroutounian’s debut feature, after dreaming (2025), which had its world premiere at berlinale. it was highlighted as a gem of the festival in the new york times and produced by brad becker-parton and carlos reygadas.
critics praise after dreaming as “the most transfixing, formally experimental first feature seen in an age” (bfi); “a dreamlike film that floats on air, while keeping the sharp fall beneath it in constant view” (variety); and “a debut that offers something rare; the chance to live inside an unfamiliar memory, to experience cinema as an act of cultural archaeology, to glimpse the spectral echoes of history in the present” (movieweb).
mankazar is currently in development with haroutounian’s second feature film, black star angel.
